    WW 2 was rhe grearest conflict in human history, and the Eastern Fronf the greatest and bloodiest theatre of that conflict but because it was largely fought between Germans & Russians it is woefully under represented in Hollywood. The Western Theatre of WW 2 was won or lost in Russia. I've seem Pekinpahs C of I a few times and really like it as I think it is a fair representation of the carnage of that conflict. James Cohborn irrespective of his age gave a great performance, a film well woth watching.

    Yes, James Coburn was horribly miscast as Fw Steiner. But it's a tribute to his abilities that he did the job well enough that so many of us warheads liked it. While his language and American accent didn't do the role any favors, his craggy weathered features and the way he carried himself in the role really did nail the 'tired old soldier' aesthetic. This is pretty amazing since Coburg's own military experience was two years as a draftee in 1950. And even THAT experience was in special services... he was a DJ for an AFN station and a narrator for training films! Not much grunt experience at all. Coburn did so well at the role of Steiner that he out-acted Richard Burton in the really awful sequel, 1979's 'Sgt. Steiner' [also called 'Breakthrough']. Fun fact about Breakthrough, btw... it was Christoph 'Hans Landa' Waltz' first film!

  • @MarkCSevenSixTwo
    @MarkCSevenSixTwo День назад

    I thought he portrayed the role very nicely. If you're looking for a real mis-casting, check out Richard Burton in the role of Steiner in the second instalment. That film is as close to unwatchable as it gets, and Burton is absolutely hopeless as Steiner, totally unconvincing.

      The context matters. Was it in a literary work or was it in a report of events that's supposed to be exact and trustworthy? In Leo Tolstoy's "The Cossacks" novel there's a mention of Chechen combatants strapping their knees to that of their fellows so they wouldn't succumb to panic and flee from the hopeless fight against the Russian chasing party. However, even though inspired by Tolstoy's actual military experience, it's mostly a work of fiction.

    • @markaxworthy2508
      @markaxworthy2508 17 часов назад

      @@SamuraiAkechi Malaparte was sent as journalist with the first Italian corps deployed to the Eastern Front in 1941. He wrote two books on his experiences, "Kaputt" and "The Volga Rises in Europe". The former is novelesque but the latter is based on his newspaper reports. I think Malaparte was a South Tyrolean who changed his German name for professional reasons.

    Universal conscription translates to a reserve army with men (and women) of all ages serving. NCOs in their 40s, 50s and then some were a regular sight in the Wehrmacht - even before the Volksturm and all that jazz. Just like they are now in the IDF, FDF and other militaries where everyone gets to/has to serve.

    That's completly bullshit. The straps shown were for transport the guns when changing the position. not to chain the soldiers to the guns... That makes no sense especialy when the gunner was hit/killed and the dead body wouldn't allow another gunner to takeover the now unmaned gun, very big mistake...

    The apocryphal quote about not having doctrine refers to the Americans, and doesn't claim that they don't have any, it says they don't follow it. A superb war movie. I think Coburn is far better as Sgt Steiner than Richard Burton. Coburn is convincing as a cynical, grouchy and down-to- Earth war veteran. I served under ' iron balls' Sgts like him - not always likeable but always worthy of respect for their operational experience. Think of tough platoon leaders in movies and TV, John Wayne comes to mind as Marine Sgt. Striker in The Sands of Iwo Jima and Vic Morrow as Sgt. Saunders in the Combat TV series.
